Local Updates

Aviation Challenge -14th December 2020

Careers Hub Luton in partnership with some of the Cornerstone employers and the Small Piece Trust are providing over 100 students the opportunity to take part in the Aviation Challenge STEM activity, where they will build their own aircraft.

This interactive event aimed at encouraging more young people to consider STEM careers in a fun and engaging way, will be delivered virtually to Key Stage 3 students by The Small Piece Trust with supports from local employers, Leonardo, Luton Council and Guidant Global.

Many thanks to Leonardo who are sponsoring the participating students to achieve the CREST award, inspiring young people to think and behave like scientists and engineers.

Virtual Work Experience

Luton Council in Partnership with Careers Hub Luton, Develop EBP and Speakers for Schools offered a pilot 2 day Virtual Work Experience Activity for over 200 students at Ashcroft High School.

Students took part in classroom sessions that highlighted an understanding of Luton Council, the types of jobs and careers available, the role of local government.

Teachers supported students, in classrooms named after wards in Luton, though a variety of video tasks, and live interactive sessions facilitated by the schools’ teaching staff.

STEM Inspiration Week

Careers Hub Luton worked closely with STEMPOINT East to set up a week of STEM Inspiration activities. It was free online sessions for Years 8, 9 and 10. We wanted to raise the profile of STEM locally and encourage more pupils to take STEM subjects and understand STEM careers. The activity was also keen to embed employer encounters into the curriculum
The week had the support of the following speakers and their organisations, who gave their valuable time free-of-charge to support this project.

The event was available to schools across the East of England and we had more than 9000 students register to attend.  Across Careers Hub Luton we had approximately 4000 students register.

We understand that a number of teachers were unable to access the live sessions because of technical difficulties and timetable difficulties, so see linked below recordings of the sessions with some comments from teachers and students. We hope you will be able to continue to use the resources to support curriculum learning.

Year 11 Transition Information

After our Career Network meeting it was identified that it would be useful to have some information available for learners particularly in year 11 about transition and support to navigate those pathways.

Please see attached information about career planning, career planning calendar and post 16 pathways.  Career Leaders can adapt and personalize the information to support their own timelines.

Manshead CE Academy - "Video of The Week"

Career Leader at Manshead shares a video every week with staff to discuss with pupils during tutor time.  This is to inspire, raise aspiration and generate conversations about the thousands of interesting opportunities and careers around the world. She receives regular enquires from pupils and staff wanting to find out more.   It has also helped to raise the profile of careers across the school.

Please see link of one of the website she shares videos from https://www.firstcareers.co.uk/

Putteridge High School

Career Leader at Putteridge High School is on a mission and has started a campaign to ‘upskill’ their staff. See below his comments

‘Do you find that many teachers struggle to know what you mean when you throw this acronym around – LMI. Each week on the staff bulletin I have produced an ‘infographic’ with a different LMI focus’.

See below example with information provided by SEMLEP to inform staff about changes to the Digital Sector during COVID
Careers Education delivery has changed in school this year due to them returning to year group based form groups.  This has given the Career Leader an opportunity to develop the Careers Education as a discreet fortnightly session for all year groups.

Luton Sixth Form - Preparation for Pathways to Medicine Event

The Careers and Employability team at Luton Sixth Form College organised a two day event for forty of their learners interested in Pathways to Medicine. Given the circumstances of the Covid-19 situation they adapted the onsite event to be delivered online that involved having a live two way interaction. The sessions were delivered by an organisation called STARTMEDUK who provided sector-specific support for students. The event included insight into the admission process and provided access to industry experts. See below examples areas covered on the day:
  • Common interview questions and how to answer them
  • Topical healthcare issues and GMC “must-know” information
  • Medical ethics – getting the balance right in your answers
  • Multiple Mini-Interviews – what’s it all about
  • Maximising your personal performance
This was a fantastic opportunity for the learners to build on the essential knowledge, skills and confidence required to go on to higher education and pursue a career in medicine.

Some comments from the students:

‘Gave tips I didn't think about and the mock interview had questions I wasn't expecting whatsoever so it was good practice to handle different questions’.

‘Very informative and really gave me a better insight into the interview process. I feel more confident in answering interview questions with feedback to improve on’.

‘Helped clarify how to answer and develop on mistakes and how to interest interviewers’.

‘The doctor gave very good constructive criticism’.

The Chiltern School

We hear from Jo Scott, the Pathway Leader Post-16 & Work Related Learning (named Careers Leader) at The Chiltern School about their online student run shop – Socsshop.com and being finalists for the Best Career Programme category.

The aim of creating our online shop is to develop relevant employability opportunities for young people as they prepare to move into adulthood.

Many of our pupils have aspirations of finding paid or voluntary employment following education.

An online shop provides young people with the chance to learn and develop entrepreneurship.  There are a range of roles that exist in the running of an online shop that will develop and support pupils interests. These include:  creativity, design, media and functional skills such as communication, literacy and numeracy. These skills can transfer to different industries and work settings in the future as well as wider life skills.

For our more practical pupils it also provides a platform for those working on vocational study paths to showcase and sell their products and produce, giving them a real purpose to their learning.

Students are very proud to be running this enterprise venture; they have worked with the web-builder and photographer to complete media workshops within employability lessons to understand better how to manage their shop efficiently and professionally.  They have also recently interviewed and applied for specific job roles within the socsshop.com just like they would have to in the real job market.

"Best Careers Programme"

We were thrilled to hear that we have been nominated for Best Careers Programme Award category schools and colleges for the National RateMyApprenticeship Awards 2020.

It was then especially exciting when we heard that we had got through to the final 50 and following the judging panels decisions, to be shortlisted to be one of the three finalists alongside a large London college and an independent mainstream school.  The final ceremony was on 20th August - we weren’t winners this year but still very proud to have been nominated.

The best careers programme was a new category for the RateMyApprenticeship Awards this year and we submitted our employability curriculum frameworks for secondary and post 16 aged pupils along with supporting student evidence of careers and enterprise work.  Since then we have also developed our primary employability curriculum framework to ensure that aspirations next careers steps and employability flow through the educational phases of the school.
